In IB Physics First Assessment 2016, resolution is a subtopic of Topic 9, wave phenomena. This subtopic has the following understandings associated with it.

  1. The size of a diffracting aperture
  2. The resolution of simple monochromatic two-source systems

In this part of the analysis, I am particularly interested in “What is the frequency distribution of the questions concerning resolution understandings?”

Frequency distribution of questions by resolution for HL

Between 1999-2023

For the entire dataset for HL, the resolution of simple monochromatic two-source systems was more emphasized than the size of a diffracting aperture.

Between 2016-2023

Between these years, the emphasis switched places. The size of a diffracting aperture was more emphasized than the resolution of simple monochromatic two-source systems.
