In IB Physics First Assessment 2016, describing fields is a subtopic of Topic 10, fields. This subtopic has the following understandings associated with it.
- Gravitational fields
- Electrostatic fields
- Electric potential and gravitational potential
- Field lines
- Equipotential surfaces
In this part of the analysis, I am particularly interested in “What is the frequency distribution of the questions concerning describing fields understandings?”
Frequency distribution of questions by describing fields for HL
Between 1999-2023
For the entire dataset for HL, more than two-thirds of the questions came from electric potential and, gravitational potential and electrostatic fields. Gravitational fields was barely assessed. A quarter of the questions came from equipotential surfaces.
Figure 1
Between 2016-2023
Between these years, half of the questions came from electrostatic fields. Gravitational fields was the least emphasized understanding.
